To connect to Linux servers, you are typically going to need or want an SSH Key Pair. SSH Key Pairs are explained in more detail here.
This guide is to show you how to create the pair of Private and Public SSH keys needed for this. The private key will be kept on your laptop or other system you use to access servers, and the public key will be kept on the servers you are connecting to.
Iteleport For Mac Os Versions
Step-by-step guide
Iteleport For Mac Os 10.13
Open up a Terminal in Mac, or get to a bash prompt in Linux
Change to your home directory: cd ~
Ensure you are logged in as your username (e.g. not logged in as root): whoami
Execute the ssh-keygen command, specifying a 2048 bit key: ssh-keygen -b 2048 -t rsa -C “[email protected]”
Follow the prompts- when you get to the question asking for a passphrase, please go ahead and enter one rather than leaving it blank.
ssh-keygen will then generate your private and public keys.
When it completes, you will need to get your public key installed on the hosts you are going to connect to.
On Mac, there is a convenient tool (pbcopy) that copies a file to your copy-buffer so you can paste it. To use that, execute: pbcopy < ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub You will then need to paste this in to an email or im if you want someone else to install the public key for you.
On a linux system, you can cat the file and copy and paste it into the email/IM: cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub
Once you’ve sent the public key, and it has been added to the appropriate systems, you will be able to use the key to login to hosts.
If your username on your Mac or Linux machine is the same as the one you use to login to the remote host, you do not need to specify it. If it is different, you will need to specify the username before the hostname/IP you are logging into
When logging in, the system will prompt you for the passphrase protecting your private key. You should only need to enter this infrequently, perhaps after reboots or suspending the machine if you are running ssh-agent, which is on by default on a Mac.
Iteleport For Mac Os High Sierra
Once you have set up your SSH Keys, you probably will want to also enable SSH Agent Forwarding, which will likely make many things easier.
